Biography
Samuel Tsugawa is the Director of Orchestras at Springville (Utah) Senior and Junior High Schools, Nebo School District. He holds bachelor and master of music education degrees from Brigham Young University and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music education from Arizona State University. Ensembles under Dr. Tsugawa’s baton have a reputation as outstanding performance groups consistently earning superior ratings at local, state, regional, and national music festivals and competitions. Notable performances include: the 1996 Utah Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference, 20 consecutive superior ratings at the UMEA State Orchestra Festival, and Division I and II ratings at the 2005 and 2008 ASTA National Orchestra Festival. Recognized by his colleagues as an accomplished classroom teacher, Dr. Tsugawa has received state teacher of the year honors including Phi Delta Kappa's WalMart Teacher of the Year (2006), the Utah American String Teachers Association's Outstanding Sr. High School Teacher (1996) and Teacher of the Year (2011), and the Utah Music Educators Association’s Superior Accomplishment (2006) and Outstanding Sr. High School Teacher (2010) Awards. Dr. Tsugawa's research and teaching interests include senior adult music learning, teacher education, alternative string performance styles, and the life and career of Merle J. Isaac.
